![]() A new generation is insisting that mental health be part of the national conversation, and many voices - among them women and people of color - are increasingly offering new alternatives to the old myths. Let's not consign Americans to be the heirs of a built-in loneliness gene, though. Fueled in part by pandemic distrust, a latter-day strain of individual-over-community sentiment often paired with invocations of liberty and freedom occupies a significant chunk of the national conversation these days - to the point where advocacy about community thinking is sometimes met with accusations of socialism. Some of the biggest stories of cooperation - the rise of municipal organizations and trade unions, the New Deal programs that helped drag many Americans out of the Depression in the 1930s, war efforts from the Civil War to World War II - sometimes get lost in the fervor for character-driven stories of individualism. ![]() Yet many frontier myths skip over how important community has been in the settling and growth of the nation. “There’s this idea that going out into those vast spaces and connecting with the wilderness and escaping the past was precisely what made us Americans," Woodard says. ![]() And in many countries that’s more true than it was in the United States,” says Colin Woodard, director of the Nationhood Lab at the Pell Center for International Relations and Public Policy. They were tied up in a web of connections. In the age before democracy, for better and for worse, “People weren’t lonely. This has been a recurring thread in how Americans perceive themselves. throws him back forever upon himself alone, and threatens in the end to confine him entirely within the solitude of his own heart.” “Thus not only does democracy make every man forget his ancestors, but it. “They acquire the habit of always considering themselves as standing alone, and they are apt to imagine that their whole destiny is in their own hands,” he wrote. ![]() Or is that, like other chunks of the American story, a premise built on myths?Īlexis de Tocqueville, watching the country as an outsider while writing “Democracy in America” in the mid-1800s, wondered whether, “as social conditions become more equal,” Americans and people like them would be inclined to reject the trappings of deep community that had pervaded Old World aristocracies for centuries. But as far back as the early 19th century, when the word “loneliness” began to be used in its current context in American life, some were already asking the question: Do the contours of American society - that emphasis on individualism, that spreading out with impunity over a vast, sometimes outsized landscape - encourage isolation and alienation? When you add recent stressors - the rise of social media and virtual life, post-9/11 polarization and the way COVID-19 interrupted existence - the challenge becomes even more stark. He cited some potent forces: the gradual withering of longstanding institutions, decreased engagement with churches, the fraying bonds of extended families. “Millions of people in America are struggling in the shadows," he said, “and that’s not right.” Surgeon General Vivek Murthy declared it an American epidemic, saying that it takes as deadly a toll as smoking upon the population of the United States. In reality, loneliness in America can be deadly. It's a classic example of a fundamental American tall tale - that of a nation built on notions of individualism, a male-dominated story filled with loners and “rugged individualists” who suck it up, do what needs to be done, ride off into the sunset and like it that way. By putting your music in a queue, you’re ordering it so that you can listen to it in a particular order. Spotify allows you to choose what order you’ll listen to songs without putting them in a playlist. You might have seen the word “queue” on your Spotify app. If you’re putting together a playlist or alphabetizing your CDs, you’re queuing your music. When used to refer to music, it means that you’re organizing it in some way. Netflix also refers to playlists as your “Netflix queue.” It’s not often used in American English, but in Great Britain and other English-speaking European countries, “queue” describes a line of people waiting or a line of vehicles in traffic. “Queue” means to form a line or list of something. But you’ve almost certainly heard it used. Queue the Musicĭon’t feel bad if you’ve never seen the word “queue” spelled out before, particularly if you live in the US. “Cue the music!” is a command for the band to start playing their first song. You can also use it to tell a group of musicians to get started. If you’ve ever heard someone telling you to “ cue the music” or “ cue the song” at a party, they’re telling you to plug your cell phone or MP3 player in and put some music on their speakers. Nine times out of ten, “cue” is the correct word to use. More often than not, this is what you mean when you say that you’re going to cue the music. Let’s explore the meaning of each of these phrases and when you should use them. The only way you’ll know that you’re using the correct one is to be very clear on both of their meanings. Spelling and grammar checks don’t always catch this mistake since both “cue” and “queue” are real words. Or your friends may mock you if you get it wrong in a group text message. If you ever plan on writing about music, you’ll want to learn the correct uses for “cue” and “queue.” Your editor will get frustrated if you can’t distinguish between them. These words may sound virtually the same, but their meaning and spelling are completely different. You may wonder: if these two words sound exactly the same, why do I need to know the difference? Well, you may someday want to write it down. Why Knowing the Difference Between the Two Words Matter We’ll look more closely at what a music queue is later on in this article. Further validation exercises are planned on the solution in the coming months under the leadership ENAV, the Italian air navigation service provider. However, further testing is needed to analyse the feasibility of the solution in high traffic demand and highly complex situations. Preliminary results suggest that both the concept and the delegation procedure are operationally feasible and acceptable by air traffic controllers for low and medium traffic load and complexity scenarios. Specifically, the scenarios included potential delegations between Madrid ACC and Sevilla ACC, and between Barcelona ACC and Palma TACC during night periods, low and medium traffic demand periods, as well as high traffic demand and congested periods (ATFCM). The simulation brought together ten air traffic controllers from the different Spanish area control centres (ACC) to work in different delegation scenarios, managing various traffic loads and levels of complexity. In particular, this testing aimed at demonstrating the operational feasibility, operational acceptance, and performance benefits of delegating ATM services during night, fixed time and on-demand operations. The focus of the testing was on validating the delegation of ATM services provision among ATSUs in nominal conditions. Led by DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung, the German air navigation service provider, the project aims to advance automation technology solutions and procedures that will help controllers to handle the traffic in a smooth and efficient way.įollowing a successful round of V2 validations in 2021, SESAR partners led by ENAIRE, the Spanish air navigation service provider, have now completed a first human-in-the-loop simulation of the solution (PJ.10-W2-Solution 93 - Delegation of airspace between air traffic service unit - ATSUs - using the virtual centre concept). But as more aircraft become more diverse and numerous, the airspace becomes more complex to manage. Keeping aircraft safely separated is one of, if not, the core function of air traffic management today. The solution is one of several under development by the SESAR industrial research project, PJ.10-W2 PROSA. This is the first in the series of validation exercises, which aims to prepare the solution for industrialisation, enabling Europe to move towards more interoperable, cost-efficient and flexible air traffic service provision. SESAR members and partners have started a new round of testing of a solution to delegate air traffic management services within a virtual centre environment. ![]() You worked hard to create this awesome GIF, so the next natural step is to share it on social media for all your friends and family to enjoy.
